"The Hick from French Lick", Larry Bird led the Indiana State Sycamores to an undefeated regular season the 1979 National Championship Game. Bird led an unranked team at the beginning of the season to the #1 ranking by the end. He averaged nearly 29 points and 15 rebounds per game on his way to being named National Player of the Year.
The '79 title game, against Michigan State and their star Earvin "Magic" Johnson, remains the most important in the history of college basketball and is credited with starting March Madness as we know it today.
